Question
30 years ago in northern Michigan,I found, buried in a backyard, what I am assuming, is a cannon ball. It weighs 41 pounds and is 7 inches in diameter.  It appears to be solid...no welds or any openings of any kind. Someone recently pointed out that it may be dangerous? Is that possible? I paint it and use it as a lawn ornament.  I don't think my neighbors would appreciate it if it blew up their houses.  How do I find out if it is safe? Thanks

Answer
Hi Judy,

It sounds like you have a "40 pounder" on your hands.  Examine it carefully.  If there is a 1" round plug any where on the surface of the ball then it could well be a hollow ball filled with black powder.  On the other hand, it may be a solid naval ball rather then a fused ball.  A solid ball would not be dangerous.  Most 40 pounders were solid.

If you do find a 1" round plug. let me know.  I'll provide instructions on how to deal with it.
