Archaeology/Another Cannonball?

Question

Hello Mr Salier,
I came across your post about the cannonball by Google online. I just moved into a home built in 1875, lived in by a Civil War Cavalry Veteran in Wenonah New Jersey, in Gloucester County. I found this item on the floor near the stairs, and it looks like the one from the earlier post. It weighs about 16 lbs, and is 15-3/4 inches in diameter. If it is indeed filled with black powder, can it just "go off" or do I only have to be careful with dropping, or near heat? Thanks for your time--

Answer
Hi Jeff,

This is a hollow cannon ball with an intact fuse.  This is a dangerous object and could indeed explode!! Do not place it near heat, or hit it with a hammer or drop it as these actions could lead to an explosion.  Take it to the Gloucester County historical society and donate it.  Then let them deal with the liability.
