Question
Hello! My name is Alex Nadel. I am writing on behalf of my nephew who is 19 years old. He finished first year of college and dropped out. Now he is sitting in his room all day long without venturing outside at all. He doesn't want to continue his studies at this point and has no skills for work. He likes History and reads a lot on his own. He does have a very low self-esteem. I was wondering if there is an opportunity for volunteer digging somewhere with place to stay and food paid for.
I think he would like to go where there is no pressure.
Thank you in advance for your help. Have a nice day.
Alex Nadel

Answer
Mr. Nadel,

I understand your concern.  Kids with low self-esteem do need help and some times it is hard to find the right kind of help.  An archaeological dig could be a good idea but history does not always translate to archaeology.  Is he interested in archaeology?  Digging in the dirt, getting dirty, sweaty and working in the hot sun?  Does he have patience for very detailed work?

There are many opportunities in the form of field schools.  These are generally sponsored by colleges and universities.  Some, are also sponsored by local archaeological societies with professional supervision.  Field schools look at a very wide range of archaeological sites from "modern historic"  to prehistoric in nature.  There are also field schools over seas.  In the UK for instance the Field Studies Council sponsors digs every year for 1 or 2 weeks at a time.  These generally do include food and housing as part of the "tuition" for the field school.  Field schools sponsored by colleges and universities also provide food and housing as part of the tuition + fees.  Many field schools are being formed currently as these take time to organize and fund.  Become a member of www.shovelbums.org as this site will list field schools around the world.

I would love to have the opportunity to communicate directly with your nephew.  Some  times the attention of an out side person can help.  Having an insight as to why he has low self esteem is helpful as is some idea of his broader areas of interest.  For instance, you indicated history, the history of what?  Is it culturally limited or time frame limited?

If I can  be of further assistance, please let me know.

Ralph

PS. Your name is some how very familiar.  Do you know an Eva Salier in Vineland NJ?
