The roman empire did not extend to the Irish mainland, the Vikings did. However Irish traders with Roman Britain did and were influenced by the Roman "System". Ireland was controlled by various warlord clans and a smart trader or traders would therefore develope residential defenses akin to that in Britain having seen first hand how they worked. This we have seen through history worldwide. Just as in Irish  history the churches built stone roundtowers. for defense and self preservation. (and they worked..where did they get this from...European castles)
