AboutRichard Taylor, AIA Expertise Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.

I have a a basement set of stairs that I would like to turn the last 2 steps 90' to the right. The current stairs are broken into two sections first flight, turn right, second flight straight to basement concrete floor.
Looking at the stairs I think I just need to cut off the last 2 steps, create a support platform for the stairs remaining and then attach the cut-off steps to the side of the new platform.
Is this the right way?
many thanks
Answer Howard - thanks for your question!
That's basically it, yes. The only thing I'll add is that when you extend the third tread to become the landing, you must check to be sure you still have 80" clear headroom at all points on the landing, especially where you turn to decend the last two steps.
Hope this helps!
