Question
I know stair code, but does it apply directly here?: two risers one "tread" between rooms:desired width of between 6 to 8 feet: what depth restrictions apply(desired is 20 to 24 inches). Idea is grand feel and ability to place plants etc, as design elements/changes.  Thanks...

Answer
Stephen - thanks for your question.

Residential stair codes only call for minimum tread depth and maximum riser height; there's no restriction on making the treads deeper than code minimum.

So if you want 7 1/2" risers and 24" deep treads, go for it!

The only other thing to keep in mind is your comfort using the steps if it's going to get significant use; an odd tread-riser combination can make for an uncomfortable gait walking up and down.

The general rule-of-thumb for the proper combination of riser heights and tread depths is 2X riser height + 1X tread depth = 25".  For example (2)7.5" risers + (1)10" tread = 25".

Hope this helps!

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
