Question
If I'm not mistaken the American FIRST floor in a building is called GROUND floor in England. Am I right? If so, what do they call the floor above the ground floor in England? First floor or second floor? Thank you Victor

Answer
The Continental manner of naming the floors apparently has to do with the way palaces were built.  The king or noble normally had a bedroom and main reception rooms on the second floor above grade.  In Italy this level is called the piano nobile, or noble level.  The floor above the Ground Floor in England is called the First Floor, as well as throughout most of Europe and South America.
