Expertise
Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.

Architecture - Storybook Cottages

Expert: Richard Taylor, AIA - 5/17/2008

Question
Hello, I am very interested in storybook cottages. I love the cottages in Carmel, California. I believe they are called Storybook Style. I have been searching books, magazines, and websites for many weeks now and still cannot find much information on how the houses are laid out. I am wanting to build soon. I live in a very small town where there is not many architects to choose from. We want to build a small storybook style cottage like the ones you see on Carmel but I am not able to find any information on any floor plans. I was wondering if you had any information on these homes or any like them? Thank you so much!

Answer
Hi Casey - thanks for your question!

The best source I've seen on the cottages you're describing is the book "Storybook Style", available on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Storybook-Style-Americas-Whimsical-Twenties/dp/0670893854/...

Don't expect to find too much on the floor plans, however - these are private homes for wealthy Southern Californians who don't want the details of their homes' interiors published, or the integrity of the designs compromised (home designs are protected by copyright laws).

More importantly, each of these homes are true "one-of-a-kind" designs - the floor plans are as varied as the exteriors.  They came about because someone commissioned their creation.  If you want something similar, you'll probably want to find an architect talented enough to create one for you.

There's a website with plans similar to these at www.storybookhomes.biz.

Hope this helps!
