Architecture - Turning space for cars

Expert: Paul S. Brown, AIA - 5/17/2008

Question
What is the space required for backing out a a garage, turning, and driving out?  We are looking at building a house where the garage is behind a single width porte cochere, and there is an enclosed court for turning the cars to drive forward onto the street.  The garage will be minimum two cars, and preferably three, and we drive large cars.  I'll appreciate your help.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Tony:

10 feet wide by 20 feet deep is a good turn-around size for a single car; 20 feet by 20 feet for a double-wide turn-around space.

Check this website for much more detailed information on driveway layouts:

I'm sorry this took me a couple days to respond; I was away at my nephew's graduation and assumed that I would be able to get an internet connection on his campus ... but no luck!

Good luck with your project; it sounds like grand new home!
- Paul B.
