Question
I read your comments about building single family residences with concrete block and I understand your frame of reference is the cold winters of Ohio but would you still have the same objections to building with concrete block if you had to deal with the heat, moisture, mold , termites, carpenter ants and hurricanes of the Gulf Coast ?

Answer
Concrete block is used extensively in Florida.  Termites can't eat through it, no mold and very little moisture issues   Stands up to hurricanes better than frame walls if rebar is used every 24".  Wood frame is used on the coast and towards the west more and more and the further away from Florida.
Stucco adheres to block better than on a wire mesh over wood framing.
The problem is that it has a low insulation value.  I would add 2" of styrofoam on the exterior as the physics of heat transmission works best that way, but more often you see it on the inside wall.
