Question
Hi,
I am a ninth grader in high school and I want to be an architect. I have no idea what sciences are required. Do I have to take physics and AP physics? Should I continue in art or do drafting and architectural drafting? Should I take any graphic design classes or engineering tech?
I have no idea what to do. What do colleges suggest?

Answer
Hello,
You should talk with your guidance counselor and review college catalogs describing the course structure for one or more well established schools of architecture to see current requirements.
Generally you don't need specialized courses in high school to qualify.  I went through a college program from 1972-78 so you will have to see what is required for the next 3-5 years.
Most college level programs have one to two years of electives and preparatory courses.
If you have basic trigonometry and pre-calc, you should be fine.  Taking drafting and drawing classes in high school are helpful.  Any kind of personal effort towards gathering materials for a portfolio would be very very good: drawings and sketches, photos, any simple CAD work (buy 3D Home Architect for example), an essay, etc.
Graphics and engineering play a role in architecture.
You also have options: Building Design, Interior Design, Urban Planning.
You could shadow an architect for a day or two to get an idea what we do day to day.
If you have many interests that are related to this field, investigate the 4 + 2 program at Texas A&M and other schools that offer a Bachelor in Environmental Design, then a first professional degree as a Master of Architecture.  This is what I did in fact.
Best wishes,
JH

I am interested in the artistic and theoretical aspects of architecture and urban design/planning. I can discuss the progression of classical to modern architecture, the general stylistic and technical development, the formation of towns and cities, the background and training of architects. Ask any question relating to the profession, working with an architect, background information, etc.
