I'm planning my first major project in my house, a total kitchen remodel.  I don't know if I need an architect to help plan it or working with a general contractor will be enough?  What exactly can I expect from the architect?  Should he/she be involved throughout the project?  What kind of fees would an architect charge for such a project?

Answer
No architect is needed unless structural changes to the frame of the house are required.  Moving any wall must be investigated to see if it is bearing.
Most kitchen remodelings can be handled by working directly with a cabinet manufacturer.
If there are other elements involved that have nothing to do with structure, then you may be fine with an interior decorator.
Architects are also happy to work with you.  Fees would depend on scope of work: how large is the kitchen, what has to be redone, how much specwriting is involved, how many site visits are required, etc.
I would ask local architects to give you a quote for this as we do not normally do remodels.
Retaining an architect who draws and specifies all aspects and materials will allow you to competitively bid the project out to several contractors.
You may also go directly to a building contractor who specializes in remodels for at least a quote.  They will assemble a design team to assist you, but you the best you can do for overall cost is cost plus rather than a competitive bid.
