Architecture/Questions about the attic

Question
Dear Mr. Henry:

I am having a problem with the attic in my home.  I have heard animals in the attic and am concerned with how they are entering the attic.  I inspected the perimeter of the house with a ladder looking where the shingles meet the gutter and did not find any holes that an animal could use to gain entry.

I thought you could help me with the ventilation of the attic possibly providing an entry point.   Along the peak of the roof is a device that I believe is there to allow hot air to escape from the attic.  Would this device be big enough for an animal, possibly a squirrel to enter?

Also, do attics need ventilation?  I recently read an article to say you should cut off all ventilation to the attic.

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,

John Jones

Answer
Hi John,
Not sure how to answer this.
If you have found only one possible way for a critter to get into your attic, then that is probably what has happened.
Send a photo of the ventilation device at peak of roof.
Attics can be made completely draft free or usually have vents on both sides or more of a gabled roof.
Attics take ventilation normally to reduce heat load on the roof and partly for moisture from main house to escape.  Here is a more in-depth article: http://www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/infattfan/infattfan3a.html
Consider using this product if you would like to seal off your attic:
