Question
Hello, Mr. Henry. I know this is an unusual question, but in terms of architecture, what makes a house look haunted? Thank you for your time and expertise -- and not laughing at me :), Alicia

Answer
best question asked to date....

haunted

any house in any style that is unkept, shuttered, overgrown yard, paint peeling, etc.

but in hollywood usually a Gothic style manor or castle.  Victorian, Italianate typical.
--can be Romanesque.  Mansart roof, central tower, fancy moldings at entry, pointed arches, dark windows, extensive porches in shadow.
not new obviously but ancient looking with aged stone, moss growing on ramparts, statues in forecourts, fountain -- cracked, wild landscaping-- overgrown with dead trees, brown grass, etc; tall steep roofline with many towers, gables, and other castle elements (crenelation, widow's walks, filligree, turrets, lookouts, etc) usually behind iron fence and tall gate.
parts of house can be leaning or broken.
the types of house normally NOT associated with hauntings are modern designs as there is plenty of glass, flat roofs, horizontal.  classical styles or period style most pictured as haunted.  don't forget the grey skies and gloomy atmosphere that goes with a haunted setting.
no sign of life anywhere: no cars, no mailbox, no animals in the yard or even birds in the sky!
