Question
Hi, I am 16 years old and am extremely interested in residential architecture and building design but I am having a few troubles that I hope you can give me a bit of advice for.  I have been using a very, very basic program-not even AutoCAD-for designing houses and etc. but am having a couple difficulties with expanding from just the design to the framing etc.  Would it be completely absurd to think that a local architect could help me out with some of this stuff and help me get a finished design under my belt for a portfolio? (And I do know there is no such thing as a free lunch.) Any advice you have will help me! Thanks!

Answer
If there was a time to walk into an office and ask it is now due to the slow construction economy.
You can also contact most builders and ask them or get a referral to their framers who would probably help you too.
Also consider lumber companies who have in house truss engineers.

Expertise

I am interested in the artistic and theoretical aspects of architecture and urban design/planning. I can discuss the progression of classical to modern architecture, the general stylistic and technical development, the formation of towns and cities, the background and training of architects. Ask any question relating to the profession, working with an architect, background information, etc.
