Architecture/shed roof for porch

Question

Shed Roof Porch Additi
I have inquired with you before and was wanting to put a small gable in front of our house that stuck out about 6 feet so we would have an entry way.  Well since then we have decided a shed roof would look better so that we could have a front porch that went along the front of our house. We would eliminate the small gable. Is it that difficult to put a shed roof on the front of our house because if it has the valley. I would like to have a continuous gutter but not sure if it is possible.  Does it depend on how deep the porch is since the sidewalk already exists and we are not going to make it any wider than 6 ft 3 inches that it is now.  Or could the porch gutter go below the fascia on the protruding garage?  We will be putting composite shingles like the rest of the house.  Is the rise and run 3/12 or 4/12 for asphalt shingles.

Here's a picture of my house again.

Answer
Hi Nancy - good to hear from you again.  The shed roof will work as long as the pitch is steep enough.  Whether that's a 3:12 or 4:12 minimum depends on the manufacturer.  I've seen both.

The shed just frames into the valley, no more difficult than the gable roof (and probably a little easier!).

I would make the fascia the same height all the way around - figure out where the new fascia butts into the existing and work backwards from there!

Hope this helps,

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
