Question

Cherub Stone
We bought this Cherub Stone at a sell in Roa,Va and was told it came from an old opera and theater house in Philadelphia,Pa. that was torn down. I think it is from 1880 to about 1920. I can't find any history on it. Wanted to know if you have seen anything like this. It has a "V" engraved on the earlobe.

Answer
Thank you for your question Linda. The piece you have found is amazingly beautiful.

I did some research over the Internet and found that a Cherub is a type of divine being mentioned in the Bible, usually understood as a high-ranking angel. You may want to look that up at the Wikipedia website if you wish to learn more about the origins of the Cherub.

These are often made of resin or stone and are used as landscaping decors. With reference to what kind of stone that was made of could vary.

I recently had the opportunity to order angel statues in Limestone for a customer. The angels were directly sculptured in the Limestone. These enhance value to all homes looking for that added touch of classic decor.

The "V" engraved on the earlobe is probably the signature of the person who sculptured this particular piece.

I can hope these "leads" can help you in your research.

Thank you,

Joan Miller
