Architecture/Architecture career path

Question
Hi john

I'm a high school graduate. Interested in pursuing architecture as a career. I can't imagine doing anything else.

The problem is I can't go to architecture now; due to complication, so I thought of going for a bachelor in anything else, and the a 3 or 4 years in architecture.

My question is as a professional architect what bachelor major do you think will help me in my future architecture career, and will some how make me stand out among?

I'm currently thinking in engineering (chemical, electrical, or mechanical), or maybe business will just help me in the career life itself??

thank you,

Lama

Answer
Hello Lama,
I received a 4 year Bachelor in Environmental Design from Texas A&M University.
As a stand alone degree it is not as good as one in Chemical or Petroleum engineering for example.
It is a great prep for the Bachelor in Architecture which is 5 years in the U.S.
A major or minor in International Business would also be very good.
The current world economy has resulted in very little work for architectural offices but if you go for 4-5 years to school now you will probably come into the workforce at a better time with more opportunities.
A major in unrelated design and architecture courses will mean you will have fewer courses that will be credited to the architecture degree.
Discussing this further with a guidance counselor will be of benefit.
Also, if you have a few choices for architecture universities get in contact with the registrar to see what curriculum is offered and try to match some of those courses in your first bachelor program.
Best wishes,
JH
