Question
Hi.  If working with a limited amount of space in a master bedroom, is it better to put in one large walk-in closet or 2 small walk-in closets?  Or does it matter?  I'm just wondering if one option takes up more space than the other somehow.  Thanks

Answer
Good afternoon Danielle - thanks for your question!

A single large WIC generally has more "empty" space in the middle than what you're have with two smaller ones, so smaller closets might be a tad more efficient.

BUT, each case is different - it depends on the layout of the bedroom (windows, doors, furniture) and the layout of the closets themselves.  I've done both, and generally have more flexibility with multiple closets.

The key to maximizing hanging space is using closet systems (double and triple-hanging, built-in shelving, etc.) and eliminating extra space in the middle of the closet.  Also remember that closet corners can be space-wasters; use prefabricated corner units to max out the corner space.

Hope this helps,

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
