Architecture/Architectural elements business

Question
I am an artist and have a son who is studying architecture. My idea is to start an architectural elements company in which we can use both our talents and grow it up so when he graduates in several years from now at least we have a base company that we then can take to more specialized projects. When I say architectural elements I say metal work like gates and railing, also I know how to cast several metals and also I can work with some decorative concrete elements. My problem is that I have no clue about this type of business and he still is very far from graduation. So I would like to ask where can I start, what sources to search, where to find information. So I would really appreciate any help that you can give me.

Thank you

Answer
Alfonso, your question is largely outside of my strictly architectural experience.  I have often in the past had contact with vendors who built a small construction-related business around a clever idea for a product, or developed a product that filled a niche.  I suspect that the primary ingredients to success, once the idea is hatched and marketable, are patience, timing and a day job.  It sounds like you would like to find a niche market that fits your fabrication skills, so you'll need to determine also whether you wish to be your own sales force or sell to a middle-man.  And regarding "timing", we all look forward to an improved economy.

I can suggest that you look into King Architectural Metals (kingmetals.com)as a company that currently markets a vast array of specialty fabrications to the construction industry; I have no idea whether they also fabricate.  Also, you might research companies working in FRC (fiber reinforced concrete); I don't have a specific one in mind but they tend to be small shops making specialty items, often quite complex, for the construction industry in their immediate locale.

Much success to you and your architect-to-be son.

Expertise

I can address light construction questions--how things should be assembled, why they come apart and how changes in construction practices, technology and deferred maintenance should be factored into any consideration of the proper fix. I cannot answer complex construction queries that require specific site knowledge and would elect to avoid those that smack of a litigation history.

Experience

I have been in private practice in New England for more than 30 years, during which time, as a hobby, I have personally owned and restored for either personal or adaptive reuse, five pre-1775 homes, of which my wife and I still own and maintain three.
