Question
Hi I am constructing a front porch on a Cape Cod Style house with gables on the front. The porch will cover half the front 6 ft wide and 16 ft long. Should there be a post (column ) in the middle each section of rail 8 ft long  or should there only be post at each end rail 16 ft long?

Answer
Hi Don,

Part of your question deals with structural issues which is not possible to answer with the information given. You should consult a structural engineer and/or your inspector in your area. Architecturally speaking, though, it will likely look better with a post every 8'. It probably will look strange to have a span that is 16' long.

Good luck,
