Question

Windows and Doors
We are remodeling the front of our house.  Putting up new hardy plank siding and replacing windows.  Someone suggest I go with shorter windows.  I like the longer windows plus inside we have low ceilings.  We are eliminating the window to the left and eventually putting a front door and  small gable.  Right now the front door is on the side and looks like it is for the garage.  Also way to the right we are removing the door as it goes into the addtion that was added on years after the house was built.  We purchased this house a couple years ago.  This is a ranch style house do you have any suggestions for style of windows and door?  I thought front door and one side window?

Thanks for your help,

Nancy

Answer
Hi Nancy,

It appears your windows are close to the ground so there does not appear to be a code issue with the glass. If you have windows high above the ground the current code says the sill must be 24" minimum above the floor.  Check your local codes to see if this applies in your situation, especially if you have small children.

That said, I wouldn't make the windows smaller. Natural light is an asset and making them smaller will diminish the light you have.

As for style of the windows, doors and house, it could go many many ways. You could go more modern, and choose some dark framed windows, or stained natural wood and then paint the siding and trim the same color. You could go more craftsman, and do a prairie style window with divided lights at the top and then do a more craftsman style trim and front door. Or you can go with the double hung window with full divided lights and go more traditional.

Just be sure to keep whatever you do consistent across all elements to make it look cohesive.

Hope this helps.
