Question
We want to make an addition to our home. An architect has given us a proposal, which includes his fees, schedule, and what will be done. My father thinks we should also ask for a rough draft of the plans before payment. Is that customary or is it out of line? What can we expect to get before we commit to using an architect (by paying him/her the deposit)?

My rule is typically I don't do drawings for free, but I do discuss ideas, process, fees, etc at length with potential clients before they hire me. I usually show some past work products so clients have an idea of what kind of drawings to expect. And of course clients can see a lot of our past projects on our website. Usually all this information along with meeting me and seeing if our personalities jive gives potential clients enough information to feel confident that I will listen to their needs and arrive at the right solution for them. I also give potential clients a list of references which they can call or email to get additional information about how it is to work with me.  

If you done all that with the architect you are considering then I think that is enough.
