Architecture/wooden ceiling materials

Question
Hi Mr. Taylor and thanks in advance.

We have a small house with high, sloped ceilings that in the
back, come back down to 8 ft over an addition that's 8' X
14'.

We're thinking about replacing the ceiling with wood but
want to do something other than 1X4" T&G yellow pine.

I know architects make it their business to keep up with new
materials, so thought I'd ask if you knew of a product that
would work there, have some "sexiness" and still be,
hopefully, affordable given the small area.

I've looked at stuff like slatted ceilings from Rulon, etc.,
but they all seem to be geared towards large, commercial
spaces.

Thanks again!

Answer
Hi Mike - thanks for your question!  You're right, the ceiling systems you mention are for large commercial applications.  But Armstrong (www.armstrong.com) has a wood ceiling system called Woodhaven that's made specifically for homes - might be just what you are looking for.

Hope this helps,

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
