Architecture/becoming an architect

Question
Hi, my name is Louis Durio and I am currently a senior in high school and a freshman at McNeese State University (Lake Charles, LA). My question is which courses would you recommend me taking to point me in the right direction in becoming an architect. Architecture is a personal interest of mine and i would like to make a career out of it. The only problem is that i don't know where i should start. McNeese doesn't have its own architecture program but has a department of engineering. What would i have to major in to come close to an architectural feel? Would i have to take a couple of these courses if i wanted to be an architect? What math and sciences would you recommend me to take? Also do you think it would benefit me to take art courses? Would these help me in an architectural field? If you could help me or even advice would help,i appreciate you time. Thank you

Answer
Hello Mr. Durio,
You will have to transfer out as soon as possible if you wish to qualify for an architectural degree and not spend time on credits that may not transfer.
From the freshman year there are drawing and design classes that are critical and cannot be found as equivalents in any other program.
If you have to stay for one year at the most take structural, mechanical, plumbing and electrical engineering classes related to buildings and their design.  Take drawing or drafting classes, computer CAD and 3D modeling classes.  If you have basic calculus that is all you will need.
A history of art and architecture course would be good.
Otherwise transfer as soon as possible as most architecture programs are very specific about their syllabi.
I suggest meeting with a counselor there or inquiring from a most likely architecture college which courses from your university will transfer, etc.
Sorry to get back to you late but I was at continuing education seminars!
If you contact me at johnhenryarchitect@gmail.com I will forward additional information.
Thank you and best wishes on your career.
