Architecture/Mansard Roofs

Question
We recently bought a 1968 lakeside home with a Mansard roof.  This type of roof style is not our favorite as we are more of the Arts and Crafts type. We are wondering if there is a cost-effective way to change this roof without sacrificing the top floor of the home which houses all the bedrooms.

Is the second floor built into the roof?
I will have to see as much as possible of the house in order to let you know one way or another.
You may be able to change the entire character of the home by also altering the details if there are columns or a porch, etc.
