Architecture/Exterior Paint Scheme for Green Roof

Question
Hello,

We are remodeling an 1842 stucco Federal style farmhouse.  It is very humble and plain, with a center hall design.  We are adding an 'Ell' addition. My question is about what color to paint it.  We will be getting a new metal roof in an Aged Copper )light green) color, and we want the addition (hardie plank) to be different than the main (stucco) house. I would like a light tan for the stucco, and then quite a few shades darker for the siding.

What do you think? Or do you have any better ideas?  My husband would like to go more bold with our colors, but I think having a green roof is pretty bold all by itself!

THANKS,
KATIE

Answer
I'd stick with a lighter color that plays to the traditional and classical design elements that define the Colonial and Federal periods. White, ivory, light butter yellow, or buff (light tan) would all be pretty attractive especially with the roof color you've selected. When a building is simple, go for the best quality you can afford with respect to remodeling materials, and embrace the simplicity. Use landscaping to enhance the appearance. It will be beautiful.

Expertise

Residential architectural questions concerning houses designed between 1900 and 1950, where the question pertains specifically to styles, designs, plans, building materials, color schemes, paint colors, interior finishes and so on. I am NOT qualified to answer engineering questions or issues involving construction methods, plumbing, electrical and the like. For example, I can describe what an appropriate color scheme would be for a vintage 1920s kitchen, or sources for plans for Storybook Style houses. I can not tell someone how to replace the electrical wiring in their old home.

Experience

I have been researching old houses and writing about them for more than five years. (See www.antiquehomestyle.com, which is my site.)
