Architecture/Italianate gazebo

Question
Hi John, I am building a house described as being Italianate to which I want to add a gazebo (ie roof and corner posts garden structure) The gazebo will be about 6m long by 4.8m wide. The house is a stock plan therefore I don't have an architect to advise me on additional details. I've searched for a matching gazebo design but with little luck. They all seem to be either Victorian, craftsman or tropical designs. Can you give me any stylistic cues or references as to what an Italianate gazebo might look like. Thanks and regards, Lance

Answer

Italianate style house
Hi Lance,
The term Italianate stricly refers to a revival style in the U.S. in the mid to late 1800's.
These were more typically assymetrical designs in a mix of Renaissance details that included towers (cupolas), belvederes, corbels and brackets under broad eaves, shallow roof pitches with some full pediments a la Greek and Roman temples, full round arches and partial porches.  You can see quoins and heavy moldings around doors an dwindows. There were octagonal and rounded projections and influences from Victorian times as well, so there is a bit of a mix.
If you look at the examples of the porches, you can use similar detailing to create a gazebo as all that is is a freestanding porch in a regular geometry.
In their time a gazebo might have been described as a tempietto, or small temple, and have the Greco-Roman columns and entablatures which would appear heavier than the idea of a 'gazebo'.
