Question

house
Hello,
I was wondering what your suggestions would be for painting or maybe covering the yellow brick decoration around the front door and back door of our house.. It makes the home look very dated, even though it has newer white siding over the original glass stucco. (Which I actually don't mind as much as the yellow brick)..
What colours would be appropriate to paint it? can I make it look like red brick? or should I tile or put something over it? I also wouldn't mind tips on the front steps which are stained wood.. what are my options here?
Thank you.

Answer
Thank you for your question Kirsten.

Painting over brick is not recommended, for it keeps the brick from "breathing" and will chip and crack over time.

To have that "red brick" look, you have access to companies that specialize in "staining" brick in a variety of colors. This process is usually guaranteed for 25 years and provide a define uplift to your current brick. You may contact your local brick and stone distributor for company references that specialize in brick staining.

Another tip would be to cover the yellow brick with concrete thin stone. This again is offered in a variety of shapes and colors. Best would be to look at warm colors that would add value to your home.

I am not qualified to advise you concerning the front steps, but what I can say is to get those stained into a color that would be lighter as in a natural color. It would give that "welcoming" effect and enhance the look of your new masonry to come.

Hope this helps.
