Question
Little old house
Little old house
Hi Rikki,
I am in desperate need help on choosing new exterior color scheme for my house.  My house is about 50-60 years old with red metal roof, sitting up on a hill.
I already signed a contract with a professional painter but still can’t decide about the color.  They are going to use Sherwin Williams paint.  They suggested me to use Softer Tan (SW6141) for the house, Foothills (SW7514) for trim, and Basket Beige (SW6143) for foundation.  They even made big pieces of color sample of Softer Tan and Foothills for me to view but I’m not sure that I like it.
I want my house to look classic and elegant.  Please see the attached pictures and help me pick the colors.

I like the neutral tans for your house, especially with the red roof. However, here are a couple alternate schemes that might resonate better with your wish for a classic color palette.

Go with some grays. A dove gray for the main body and ivory trim with a darker gray for the foundation would work well with your roof and be timeless. If you pull in a pop of red for the front door, you can tie in the roof color. Add some foundation plantings too ... especially perennials that add a little seasonal color. Check with your local Master Gardeners through your state's Extension Service for plant suggestions that are low maintenance.

Another option is a bit more friendly and has been popular historically ... that is, choose colors from the yellow range. A rich buttery yellow for the body and a warm ivory trim would work well. It tends to be slightly less formal. There are many warm light colors like buff or the color of a manila folder with trim colors that are just a bit lighter or darker for contrast that look pretty on small houses like yours.

Personally, I think I'd do a light buttery yellow, then add foundation plantings and window boxes with cascades of flowers (with a built-in irrigation system).

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Expertise

Residential architectural questions concerning houses designed between 1900 and 1950, where the question pertains specifically to styles, designs, plans, building materials, color schemes, paint colors, interior finishes and so on. I am NOT qualified to answer engineering questions or issues involving construction methods, plumbing, electrical and the like. For example, I can describe what an appropriate color scheme would be for a vintage 1920s kitchen, or sources for plans for Storybook Style houses. I can not tell someone how to replace the electrical wiring in their old home.
