Architecture/Basement Support System

Question
I have a 27 year old house.  In the basement, the support system of the house consists of 2 by 6 wood frame running parallel with the exterior foundation about 12 feet in from each ext wall. In addition, each wall is sitting on a 6 inch raised concrete strip slab and the 2 by 6 wood plate is bolten in to the concrete. At the top is a double 6 by 6 wood beam supporting the main floor.  My question is, can I remove sections of this wall system to open up the basement and if so, what is the most I can span an opening?

Answer
Michael,

It is probably possible to remove some sections of the bearing wall.  I would need to see some photos of the wall and the beam (close and far views) in order to make specific suggestions.

Question on the double 6x6 beam: are the 6x6 members side-by-side or on top of each other?
