Architecture/Boring Ranch House

Question
Do you know where I can get some ideas on changing the looks of a ranch house. We are planning on tearing off the roof and siding and it would be a great time to do some changes. It is a 2500 sq. ft. ranch with very boring roof line etc.

Answer
Rhonda,

I have been out of town for over a week, so I wasn't able to take the time to look at your photos until now.

Here are some options that may work for you:
(1) Install a lay-over roof structure (rafters, sheathing) on top of the existing  roof. This will allow you to make the roof steeper and thus add needed mass to it.  This is a somewhat expensive option, but one that a competent contractor can handle.  Be sure to design appropriate ventilation into the new and old attic spaces.
(2) With or without option #1, install a front-facing gable roof.  Ideally this would extend past the front wall of the house by a few feet (supported by columns), and encompass an enlarged porch/entry area.
(3) Install some sections of cultured stone, perhaps up to the existing window sills, or the entire wall within the entry area.
(4) Be sure to keep the roof dark, and use high-quality architectural (laminated) shingles.
(5) Add and/or enlarge some windows.

You can also do a Yahoo and Google IMAGE search on the term "ranch house plans".  This will generate a lot of visual ideas.

I hope these help, and please let me know if you have additional questions.

Rhonda,

Please forward photos of you house to our e-mail at:

Unfortunately it's difficult for me to offer advice without seeing the structure.
