Question Hi!
I want to change my careerpath and want to go into architecture because it was always something that I've been interested in. (but somehow I landed in the education field)
I was thinking about becoming a building designer and I read something about it online but nothing really answered my questions. What exactly would I have to do to become a building designer? I read I'd have to take courses and get on the job training. What comes first? Do I get a job in this field with no experience at all? What courses do I have to take? How long do I have to take the courses? What's the process?
Also hw much different is it to become an Architect instead? What would you suggest?
Where could I find some more information?
Oh and I'm 25 years old, and have a degree in education which pretty sure doesn't help me at all in this field. And I live in VA.
Thank you in advance.
Answer Hi Manuela;
To become a building designer, there are many different ways to approach this goal.
You will need to have some technical construction drawing skills; and actual construction experience is needed also. I would suggest starting with a course at a local two-year technical college in home design, or a course in home construction, or other general construction-related courses. You will also need to learn AutoCADD, a computer drafting tool, so a course in that subject would also be wise. This will lead to opportunities to work for a custom home building contractor, in their design department.
To become a registered architect is a much longer path, and allows you to be responsible for the design of larger commercial buildings. It requires at least a 5-year degree (or a 3-year masters degree) in architecture from an accredited school, plus an internship in an office (about 4 years min.) and then a series of exams.
Good luck, it's a great field!
