Question
Hi ,

I'm a gr 9 high school student and I would like to know what courses I should take to become an architect in the future.

what math courses should I take?
Do I take physics for science?

Answer
Hi Tina Xu:
I think it is great that you are considering Architecture.
Freehand drawing and sketching is probably the most important course that you should take in High School.  And, if there is a mechanical drawing or architectural drafting class, you might want to try that as well.  Stick to pencils at first, and forget about computers for a while.  In your junior or senior year, if your H.S. offers an AutoCad course, or other computer-aided design tools, then take that course also.
Once you are 18, you should also try to get a summer job in some sort of construction-related trade.  Painting houses is a good way to learn a lot.  Carpentry is better.  Being a laborer on a non-union jobsite is a good way to get exposed to a lot of things.  Keep your eyes open, keep your head up, wear your protective gear, watch where you walk, and be safe.
Math?  An accredited college-level architectural program will want you  to have had 4 years of high school math, maybe including pre-calculus, or at least geometry and upper-level algebra.  Yes, you should take physics; it is fun and  will help you to understand your college level structures classes.
Good luck, it's a good profession.
