Question
Dear Mr. Taylor,
I just ran across this site recently and was wondering if perhaps you could help me. I have an odd interest in old homes that have third story ballrooms in them. I have searched the internet looking for information, but have found little. Do you know of any sites I could visit on this subject? I have even went as far as e-mailing Ask This Old House, but they have no info either.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerly,
Glenn Black

Answer
Glenn:

Thanks for your question!

Third-floor ballrooms were idiosyncrasies in some larger Victorian-era homes.  They were uncommom, as most public rooms were on the ground level in finer homes.

I don't where you'll easily find info on this subject; it's not likely that anyone has put up a web page about it.  I'd suggest you consider researching in the good old fashioned library!

If you know of a location of a particular home with this feature, contact the local historic society in that area.  It's the most likely source for info.

Hope this helps!

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
