Question
Hello and I appreciate your time .my Question involves my current home a coverted carriage house/stable  built in 1850.We just placed this home on the market and are finding no one wants to buy it because the rear wall is leaning. This has been a family home wich my Grandparents lived in for over 50 years and myself ten and the wall has always slanted. I was told that it has always been this way and it was constructed that way.In fact the rest of the house is straight up and down.
Is this in your opinion true? Were Carriage houses built with slant walls to keep the rain off of the horses? I am going to pay to have this looked at and am worried sick? Any input is very appreciated.

Answer
Patti:

Thanks for your question!

I've never heard of a carriage house wall that was deliberately built slanted, but that doesn't mean it wasn't.  If you could send me a photo of it to rich@rtaylorarchitects.com I can do a little research for you.

In the meantime, how about contacting your local historical society to see if they know anything about it?

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
