Architecture/Post and Beam plank deck floors/ceilings

Question
we bought our house near asheville NC and it is approx 20 yrs old  Post and Beam construction with plank deck [pine/fir 21/2" V-joint floor/ceiling [exposed 1st level] and roof. The deck of 2nd floor overhangs 1st level[approx 24-30"] at several points around the house. Typically, the orig owner decided  to make closets with that space [they are too shallow for effective use] At all overhang areas a platform [approx 5" high] was built up presumbably for insulation purposes. I intend to put down 3/8 to 1/2" plywood underlayment over plank decking, throughout the 2nd level, before recarpeting. At this point I intend to eliminate the platforms and apply underlayment and carpet in  their place. Do you see any problems with this approach. The plank decking is fully supported to the outside wall by 8' on center 6"x10" wood beams.

Answer
Good Morning, Barry - thanks for your question!

In your climate, heat loss through an overhang isn't a big concern so I wouldn't worry about that - assuming that's why the floors were built up.

If the floor surface of the planking is relatively smooth and flat, you can probably get away with 1/4" underlayment instead of the thicker stuff and save a few bucks (and save carrying those heavy 1/2" plywood sheets).

Hope this helps!

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
