Question
What is the R-value of below grade earth that is surrounding the foundation of a house that is insulated with 2" rigid insulation.

Hi Judea - thanks for your question!

The insulation you're talking about is usually about R-5 per inch. Some types of high-density insulation boards can go even higher.  The foundation wall R-value varies depending on the type of construction and thickness.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking for, but the R-value of the earth/backfill itself generally doesn't enter into energy calculations.

There is such a thing as "effective R-value" that takes the backfill into account, but there's no R-value assigned to the backfill itself.
