Architecture/Retired Building

Question
I need some basic information about a retired structure or a structure that is no longer being used for its original purpose.  I just need some basic information (name of structure, architect, location, how long it took to build, what it's being used for, and some additonal facts.)  I tried doing some google searches and came up with nothing, so your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex Conner

Answer
Alex - thanks for your question!

I'm not sure what you're asking for here or where this building is, but I'll take a shot at it!

I'll assume you're looking for this information about some specific building you're familiar with.  Current information about buildings is usually very easily found at the county auditor's office - all you need is the street address.  Most auditors keep records of all the real estate in the county and many are online.  If you Google the name of the county, state, and "auditor" you might find a link to a lot of detailed information about the building (you may have to drill down a bit to find it).

If the county auditor isn't online, you can usually call them or stop by for the same information in paper form.

In fact, most counties have information about buildings in several departments including the Engineer's office, and the Recorder, who keeps track of all of the records filed with the county including real estate transactions.

If the building is more than a few years old, try your local historical society.  They might have cataloged old photos and other information about the building.  If it's a fairly well-known building you might find out a lot about its history that way.

Finally, a local real estate office may know something of the history of the building, especially if the office has been around for a while.

Hope this helps!

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
