Question -
I need to replace the two entry light fixtures flanking my front door (also a storm door over it). Present fixtures are small, bright brass. I desire to replace them with more proportionate lamps, but do not know whether to replace with bright brass (difficult to find, very expensive) or whether I can replace with other finish. The door hardware is bright brass (weathered naturally) and a brass kickplate, window and trim are white and residence is a medium, mellow red brick, dark green shutters. What would you recommend?

Meredith:

Thanks for your question!

Bright brass can weather rapidly, depending upon what part of the country you live in.  I've never thought it an appropriate finish for outdoors.

The style of your house should direct the choice of light fixture style; there are a great deal of high-quality exterior fixtures on the market to choose from.  Once you've picked the style, then look at the available finishes.  Most fixture styles come in several finishes.

If you want a consistent finish that won't weather much, consider a "pre-aged" metal finish like anodized.  Wrought iron is also an excellent outdoor finish.

Generally, if you want want quality and long life in a light fixture you're going to have to spend some money.  In the long run, it's less expensive than replacing it.

For a good source of fixtures, try www.lightinguniverse.com.

Hope this helps!

Mr. Taylor,
thank you so much for your input. it does help me with my style choice and I understand exactly what you are saying about the finish -- am I understanding that from an aesthetic standpoint it is perfectly acceptable to combine, say a weathered copper or wrought iron fixture with the brass lockset and kickplate? you are the professional and I respect your decision.

Answer
Meredith:

Sure, that's ok, there aren't any hard and fast rules.  You're going for larger fixtures so they will be the dominant detail at the front entry.  It would be nice if everything else matched, but that's not the most important factor.

Just make sure the style of the lights fits the house.
