Question
My house is an L-shaped ranch.  The front door is placed in the corner (i.e. the intersection of the 2 parts of the "L"). Currently there is a  squarish concrete front stoop (approx. 4 ft. x 4 ft.) with 2 steps.  The house is being remodeled (new white divided lite windows framed with brick mold casing and shake siding in a light grey color.  Want to take advantage of the redo to create a more attractive stoop.  Was thinking about a curved stoop and larger in size.  Any problem was making stoop wider than door (remember door is in corner).  Was considering a curved stoop that would extend same distance from interior corner of "L".  What do you think?  Also, what would you recommend for covering the stoop and steps?  Not a fan of brick.  What about bluestone, etc.  Would like the stoop to match a curved walkway (haven't decided whether walkway will be continuous and just stepping stones).  Also plan to replace a patio in rear of house so it seems like I should use the same material.  Have contacted you before and find your advice most helpful.  I really need your thoughts here.  In the event it matters, I live in Connecticut.
Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Answer
Hi Bev - thanks for your question!

I like the idea of the curved stoop - the fact that it's wider than the door is a good thing, in my opinion.  You need room for guests to stand while they're waiting for you to answer the door.

The finish surface of the stoop and steps should complement the house.  Bluestone - or some other natural product (slate, for example) is a good idea.  What's also important is a material that will hold up to the weather you have in CT - rain, snow, etc.

Hope this helps!

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
