Architecture/adding ceiling height

Question
Hi Stephen,
I live in Canada, near Detroit.  My hubby and I purchased a farm with a tiny home on it.  The main floor only has 7'6" ceilings and it is driving me crazy!!!  The basement is a full 8 feet high and I have no issue there.

I was wondering if you could tell me if building a knee wall on top of the structure would be advisable under Canadian code?  For some reason my hubby does not think so and I would really like taller ceilings.  WE currently have a cottage roof so hubby just suggested creating a coffered ceiling...that does not sit well with me.

THank you so much for your time
Michelle

Answer
Michelle,

I am not aware of a code that would prevent the addition of a knee wall, as long as it is well attached, braced, and approved by an engineer.  The problem is, this work is MUCH more difficult to do than simply raising the ceiling joists to create a coffered ceiling.  Therefore, much of your decision should be based on the amount of resources (time, money) you are willing to put into the project.

Best of luck with your house, and please let me know if you have additional questions.
