Question
In our remodeling, after our contractor installed our beautiful gable window only for us to learn that the original front entry door is off centered!! We never noticed it until we had the gable window instsalled.  What are some ideas to help with noticeable goof.  I want to kee the gable window, but I don't like the off entered look.

Answer
Delana - thanks for your question!

Sounds like you have three options:
1) move the door - although this one probably doesn't work for a bunch of reasons
2) move the window - but then it's off-center in the gable
or
3) add an strong element that creates a strong visual center and takes your attention away from the off-center door.  This could be a covered porch, a small overhang, or something along those lines.

If you could email a photo of the house I might be able to give you a better answer!

Hope this helps!

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
