Question
i dont know if you can answer this or not and i hope u dont feel as if this is a waste of time but, i am doing a junior paper and my question is "is it better to start your own arch. firm after college or work through someone elses first?" if you could and have the time answer this for me and give some reasons why, thank you for your time.

Answer
Spencer - thanks for your question!

If you want to become an Architect, you don't have a choice!  In order to become eligible for the licensing exam, you must complete the Intern Development Program - which requires working under the supervision of an Architect.

In addition, school only gives you an overview of the profession at best.  You'll learn more in your first three years of work than all your years of college.

Hope this helps!

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.

I own a full-service residential architectural firm, and have been designing custom homes, remodelings, and room additions across the country since 1983.
