Question
what does changing the roof pitch on an already existing structure involve--time, expense, etc.?

Answer
Hi Gail - thanks for your question!

It depends upon whether you're raising or lowering the pitch.  If you're lowering it, you have to remove the roof and rebuild it, probably from scratch.

If you're raising it, it's possible in some situations to simply lay new rafters over the existing roof without tearing anything off.  But that's only if the existing structure can handle the load.

Either way, it's a fair amount of work - new rafters and plywood, new roofing, new fascias, gutters, soffits, etc.  Not a small undertaking!

You'll have to talk with local remodeling contractors to get an idea of the cost.  Contact your local National Association of Home Builders chapter (www.nahb.org) and ask about remodelors.  They should be able to give you some references.

Hope this helps!

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
