Question
What are the requirements for one to become an architect?

Answer
Hi Johann:
Generally, you need to have at least 5 years of college and get an accredited Bachelors of Architecture degree; then you need to work for a few years under the guidance of another registered architect.  At that point, you are eligable to take a series of examinations.  You can take all of them at once, or spread them out over a period of time.  After you pass all the tests, then you get your license in that particular state.  There is an annual fee to maintain your license which varies from state to state, and all architects are required to take a certain number of hours of continuing education classes each year.  The continuing education credits are easy to get and generally interesting subjects, so this is not a large burden.
There are other ways to get into the profession, if you can't afford the 5-year education.  One good way is to take technical courses in architectural drafting, and become skillful at using AutoCAD and other computer software programs.  This puts you in a good position to get a variety of jobs, including working as a draftsperson in an architects office.
