Architecture/storage shed

Question
Hi Richard,

I want to build a storage shed and would like to know how thick the plywood walls should be, and whether they need to be pressure treated.  I live in upstate NY.  I was going to go with 1/2", but that seems too thin.  I wasn't going to put siding on it, I thought I would just paint it.  Also, I was thinking of 4" concrete blocks over gravel for a foundation, so it will be raised above the ground at least 4".

What are your thoughts?

Jerry

Answer
Jerry:

Thanks for your question!

The thickness of the sheathing depends upon the spacing between the studs.  Plywood is rated for stud spacing/span and that number is stamped on the back of the plywood.  Just match the number to the stud spacing and you'll be fine.  Your lumberyard can help you with that.

The only wood that needs to be treated is the wood in contact with the concrete block - the sill plate, typically.  There shouldn't be any need to treat the sheathing.

Since you're not going to side it, you might consider using T-1-11 plywood, which has a nice finished side.  It's great for outbuildings and gives you a finished look without the extra effort and expense of siding.

Hope this helps!

Expertise

Ask me about all aspects of house, remodeling. , and room addition design and construction. Ask me about historic homes, renovation, and restoration. Ask me about materials and techniques, and about how you can get the best value for your design and construction dollar. Ask me how you can make your home a very special place. I can't, however, answer specific structural engineering questions in this forum - that's something you'll need on-site observation for.
