About Cintia Expertise I was born in Argentina and have lived ever since so I can answer all kinds of questions about my country. I have also visited other countries and that has given me a wider perspective which enables me help foreigners in a better way. I have travelled along Argentina, from the north to the south and have been to almost its 22 provinces. I have also worked for a travel agency in the inbound tourism department. I enjoy being a hostess very much and feel willing to assist foreigners in the best possible way.
Experience Have travelled a lot along the country. Iīve been in charge of the inbound tourism department at a travel agency. I worked in Japan as a volunteer for a culture exchange organization, giving lectures about Argentina.
I would like to live in Buenos Aires. If possible, I would like to both work and study there. As an american citizent, what instutions should I be contacting before getting there? What are the possibilities that what I'm trying to do will work out? I moved to France a few years ago and I found it extremely challenging. It took me almost a year to get a working visa!
I am also concerned about finding a place to live and I want to know how much money I should save so I can survive until I get on my feet over there. I would apprecitate any information you could give me.
Thank you,
Michelle
PS The language is not a problem, I speak fluent Spanish.
Answer Dear Michelle,
Thank you for your question.
Moving to another country is certainly a challenging experience. It also implies a lot of responsability, and the more you plan in advance, the better results you will surely have. First of all, you should contact the nearest argentine embassy/consulate for advice regarding immigration rules. I donīt know what part of USA you live in, but you could try contacting the following:
You can also contact ICANA. This is the Argentine American Institute of Culture in Argentina:www.icana.org.ar They can probably give you information about other Americans living in Argentina or American organizations that may be able to help you.
Regarding money, the amount you will need depends basically on your standard of living. If you rent a furnished studio in a good area, it will cost you around USD 300 a month. It would be cheaper if you rented a non furnished apartment, especially if you are planning to stay here for good.
Food is very inexpensive, and actually many things are very cheap compared to American standards, except for imported products which are higher.
In my opinion, it would probably be a good idea if you came on a short trip in order to check everything by yourself first, before making such an important decision as moving.
