Argentina/Studying Spanish in Argentina/late June
Expert: Cintia - 5/1/2006
QuestionHi Cintia,
Thank you for your prompt answer to my question. I did see the Argentine movie "Bombón el Perro" (¿la has visto?)and was surprised I could understand a lot of it, although I did detect an Italian "accent" in Argentine Spanish.
That said, I now have other plans for late June. I really don't want to go to BA with temps in the 30s and 40s. That's too cold! So what about sometime in the fall (Argentine spring). What would be a good month? I would like to experience not too hot and not too cold weather. Maybe just walking around with a light jacket would be good. I don't like hot, humid weather either. I am determined to get to Argentina but want to pick a good time of year. Thanks again for your time.

Hello Cintia,
I would love to go to Argentina and study Spanish. But I know that the Spanish in Argentina is different than that of Mexico. Still, do you think it would be a good place to study Spanish? Unfortuanately the only time I can go to Argentina is late June which seems to be the cold season. What do you think? Is it silly to visit Buenos Aires in late June?
Answer -
Dear James,
Thank you for your inquiry.
Buenos Aires is a cosmopolitan city, with plenty of activities all year round. It is currently one of the top world destinations and as such it is visited by foreign travelers throughout the whole year.
It is not sill to visit the city in June, the only thing you should bear in mind is that the average temperature at that time of the year is in the high 30s-40s.
It is true that the Spanish we speak in Argentina is different from the one in other Spanish speaking countries, but basically the language is the same and even though the intonation, accent and some expressions are different, you would still learn the same basics and grammar.
Many foreign people are coming to Argentina to learn Spanish because it is more affordable than other countries, and depending on how much time and money they have, they also travel around Argentina combining study and leisure.
I suggest that in case you decide to study in Argentina, try to find a renown language institute, with certified teachers and with a good reputation. You could ask the institute to provide you with a list of former students that you could contact in order to check how good that place is.
I hope this information is useful and I wish you lots of luck with your Spanish studies.
Best regards,
Cintia

AnswerDear James,
Unfortunately, I have not seen that movie but you may have noticed an Italian accent in our way of speaking as many argentinians have Italian heritage.
A good time to visit Buenos Aires in terms of weather would be by October or November, or between late March and April, when the average temperature will be between 75-85. However, please bear in mind that Buenos Aires is quite humid, all year round.
I hope this helps you make a decision about your trip and that you do enjoy your time in Argentina.
Best regards,
Cintia
