Question
QUESTION: What is the best spot to visit the GC from Mesa for an overnight visit?

ANSWER: Hi Donna,

The South Rim is the closest to Mesa.  You will want to take Hwy 17 north to Hwy 40, head West  and shortly after Williams ( about 20 miles outside of Flagstaff) you will begin to see signs.  If I understand the question correctly you are planning to stay overnight.  Williams might make an excellent location it is only about 30 minutes from the South rim.

QUESTION: Thanks, Mindy, any suggestions of how to use my time there besides basking in its' glory?

Answer
Hi Donna,

I am sorry it took me a little bit to get back to you, I was away from my computer.  Here are my suggestions.  The earlier you get to the Canyon the better particularly for crowds and parking.  In addition to the South Rim, there is a bus inside the park which will take you out along part of the west rim.  Another Vista point that is very interesting and in my mind worth the drive is the watchtower on the east point.  You will see signs for this as you pull into the park, gorgeous views and not as many people head there.

Believe it or not this will probably take up the bulk of your time.  I would suggest at least driving through Sedona on the way back, if you are coming soon the trees are about to change color.  They have already begun in Flagstaff.  YOu can follow Hwy 89A South down from Flagstaff which will take you through Oak Creek Canyon which is considered to be one of the more scenic drives in the country and you will end up in Sedona, another great photo opportunity.

Best,

Mindy
